In the Details

Ever wonder if God is in the details? Don’t you love it when things just work out? When all the pieces fall into place and there is very little frustration in the thing that you are doing? I do. I just hate it when things get really difficult. But I wonder, is God in those details or is it just luck and chance?

When you walk a life of faith in God following His lead, I think He is in the details. Take Abraham, for example, God had given him the son of the promise and now it was time to find him a wife. Abraham didn’t want his son to marry into the Canaanites but rather into his own blood line. He sends his servant back to his people and he finds himself in the town of Nahor who was Abraham’s brother.

Upon reaching his destination, he prays

O LORD, God of my master Abraham, give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. May it be that when I say to a girl, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink’, and she says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’-let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.” Genesis 24:12-14

What I find stunning with this prayer is that this is exactly what God does!

“Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah, who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor. ….the servant hurried to meet her and said, ‘Please give me a little water from your jar.’ ‘Drink, my lord,’ she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink. After she had given him a drink, she said, ‘I’ll draw water for your camels too, until they have finished drinking.’” Genesis 24:15&17-19

God was certainly in the details of this prayer. I wonder if it is that God is in the prayer or is it that God is in the recipient of the prayer. Is it the perfection of our prayer that brings result or is it the position of the recipient? After such an astounding move of God through prayer Abraham’s servant worships God and declares

Praise be to the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master.” Genesis 24:27

We learn in this story that God was faithful to direct Abraham’s servants’ steps to bring him to the woman that would be right for Isaac, his son. Could it be that God’s faithfulness to Abraham was a result of his faith that he had in God and not the powerful prayer of his servant? Could Abraham have received such favor because he chose to walk with God and trust Him with his life? Did Abraham live the kind of life that just believed God and not necessarily for an outcome? Did Abraham have the kind of faith that he was even able to trust God with the details?

Is it possible that the more we trust God and follow Him, the more we see evidences of Him in the details? Can I trust him with them? Can you?

When we are obedient, God guides our steps and stops.
